A recent research by Michigan State University business scholars shows that a controlled regulation of internet gambling could benefit the industry and protect customers.

In 2006, president George W. Bush signed the Unfair Internet Gambling Enforcement Act into law.

Blackjack and virtual poker have been illegal by the law since 2006. In 2011 the Justice Department has made an elaboration that online online gambling was legal if allowed by the state law.

That didn't clarify the law, but set a start point for that, as the MSU researchers say. The Justice Department's 2011 ruling, was associated with a 3.5 percent boost in firm values, which is great for the industry.

One of the study co-authors, Professor Mark Johnson, said: "The online-gambling industry is at the point where it wants controlled regulation," "We conclude that both the industry and individuals - including underage and problem gamblers - would be better off if regulation exists."

"Internet gambling is expected to continue to grow," Johnson said. "And while it's unclear which types of online gambling will be and won't be legal in the future, if the U.S. government more clearly defines 'legal gaming,' the benefits and risks associated with investment in all areas of the industry will be altered."
