Automate 2013 Introduces Blackjack Robot 28.02.2013

Spectators visiting the Chicago Automate 2013 were stunned to see a robot created by Yaskawa Motoman which has the ability to engage players in a game of blackjack. The SDA10F double-armed robot can deal cards to up to three players and then read the cards and play accordingly.

The SDA10F is what is referred to as a “semi-anthropomorphic” robot. The robot has two arms which are connected a torso which rotates. It has seven points of rotation and it performes each rotation in up to 1 second. This allows the robot to move swiftly and smoothly, although the movements are quite different from how a human dealer moves (largely due to the fact that the points of rotation do not allow rotations of 360 degrees).

The robot transfers cards from one hand to another hand to deal the cards with their faces upwards. There are a few physical constraints which do not allow it to move exactly like a human being, but it still manages to play the role of dealer effectively.

The SDA10F uses a 640x480 pixel VGA CCD camera (MotoSight2D) which allows the robot to recognise movements and objects on the playing surface. It uses this technology to read the upwards-facing cards. This way it can collect information with the camera and thereby act according to the rules of blackjack. At the moment, it can only play with up to three blackjack players at a time, but with rapid technological advancements, it seems as though robots might make a regular appearance at real casinos in the not-too-distant future.
