Blackjack Tweaked Odds - Good or Bad Idea? 12.10.2011

Blackjack News

A sure-fire way of getting on the nerves of casino visitors is to play around with the odds, particularly when this is done at their expense. So why do casinos do this, despite the uproar of complaints they receive from casino visitors?

Well, the justification on the part of the casinos is that this has to be done to even out rising costs in order to break even. The question is - is this the only possible way for casinos to make up for lost income? Are there other things that could be done by casinos to recover losses without irritating casino visitors? The topic has been explored by an panel of insiders and casino industry experts.

A few ideas have been tossed around. One of these, crazy as it may seem, is to install cup holders at the casinos to prevent lost revenue due to lost time where customers have spilled drinks and need to clean up. Increasing side bets, installing shuffle machines and setting up progressive jackpots are three other obvious and innocent ways of bringing up profits at casinos.

This line of thinking can help casinos to take steps which will help them regain lost profits without losing customers. But are these steps really necessary? It can be argued that theory and practice prove two very different points. Despite the fact that casino visitors love to complain about tweaked odds, they still play these slot, blackjack and roulette games just as willingly. Is it really necessary for casinos to avoid tweaked odds when it doesn't make any difference in practice? One could argue that it is, in fact, not necessary.

Clearly, casino visitors in different parts of the world think differently and each casino owner will simply have to make up his or her own mind on this issue. Perhaps if there will be enough protest from players and the numbers of blackjack players will decrease in those casinos tweaking odds, then no casino owner would care to risk alienating players.
