Can Live Dealer Games Revive the Golden Age of Blackjack? 18.12.2011

Casinos and the game of blackjack play an important role in western culture. They are depicted in countless books, films and television shows and it is virtually impossible to come across someone who has never in their lives taken part in any type of a gambling activity.

Blackjack is more heavily featured in cultural products than any other casino game. This is probably due to the fact that blackjack is not only a game of luck but also a game of skill. This fact bred hope in the hearts of gamblers all over the world that saw blackjack as their one sure way of beating the casino.

Blackjack did not become a favorite with gamblers straight away. It was only in the mid-1960’s when Edward O. Thorp published the now legendary ‘Beat the Dealer’, that mathematicians and professional gamblers woke up to the fact that blackjack is the only game where applying the right strategy and engaging in card counting can reverse the advantage that the casino has over the player and turn it into an advantage for the player.

All through the late 1960’s and 1970’s players from all over the world started playing in pairs or small teams and using the principles set out in Thorp’s book in order to make profits playing blackjack. However by the 1980’s the casinos got smarter and developed better security measures against card counters.

The 1990’s brought with them the age of the internet and towards the late 1990’s the internet started to get bombarded with online casinos offering blackjack games. However these blackjack games were operated by software which shuffled the cards after every round of play thus eliminating the functionality of card counting.

Many have thought that this would be the end of professional blackjack players however the introduction of Live Dealer Blackjack in many online casinos is taking the game out of the hands of computers and software and putting it back in the hands of real professional dealers.

The combination of playing blackjack from home while playing against a dealer that is located in a casino-styled studio is bringing card counters out of their hiding places. Now they can play online and also count cards which might be just what the sport needs for its big revival.
