Facebook Adds its 1st Real Money Gambling App 08.08.2012

Since ancient times, gambling has been an activity that many people have taken part in not only to make money but also because of the social aspects and encounters that happen around a gambling table or establishment. While many countries have had ample time to regulate land-based gambling, the case is not the same for internet gambling which is still relatively new. Many people now use social networking sites such as Facebook for socializing so it is only natural that gambling becomes a part of that too.

Although Facebook is an international website, the real-money gambling app launched by UK-based Gamesy will only be accessible to UK members who are 18 years of age or older. Gamesys already has a presence on Facebook with its Heart Bingo and Sun Bingo offerings not to mention that it operates an internet real-money gaming site called Jackpotjoy.com. Gamesys’ Facebook app is called Bingo & Slots Friendzy and it will offer tools to help block potential problem gambling and Facebook will monitor the age of players.

It appears that the UK will be a testing ground for offering real-money gambling through Facebook. A Facebook representative has said: “Real money gaming is a popular and well-regulated activity in the UK and we are allowing a partner to offer their games…on the Facebook platform in a safe and controlled manner.”

Facebook is still a company and there is no doubt that the company believes it will profit from this decision but the details of the agreement between the two companies is being kept quiet. This “test-run” will certainly be watched closely by Zynga, a gambing partner of Facebook, which plans to offer its own real-money gaming next year. Hopefully, we can look forward to a real money blackjack app from Zynga.
