How the New Laws in Germany Affect Blackjack Players 28.03.2012

After the German state of Schleswig-Holstein Lander chose to go it alone in the world of online gambling and pass its own legislation last year, the other 15 German states realized that they needed to get a proposal together. Before taking their legislation to the next step, the 15 states agreed to wait and hear from the European Commission (EC).

The EC recently issued a statement to the 15 German States regarding whether or not their treaty on internet gambling is in conflict with the European Union’s laws. The EC’s response was only luke-warm and gave the states a two year ‘trial run” to prove their case.

The EC reacted positively towards changes such as the increased number of licenses that will be issued and the taxation amounts. On the other hand, the EC did not feel that the states had made a strong case to continue banning online casino games while sports betting and poker were licensed.

The states presented an argument that casino games could be rigged, used for money laundering and can lead to addiction. Any logical person would understand that sports betting, for example, can lead to all three negative responses just as quickly as any casino game.

While there are a number of reputable online casino companies, there are also a good number of online casinos that are not. For a player, the fact that online casinos are still banned from operating in Germany should cause some discomfort. German Blackjack players must realize that the online casino ban can have serious consequences for them.

Let’s say that a German blackjack player has a problem withdrawing his money from his online casino account, who will help and support him? The answer: no one. His German government can now simply say that since it is a company that is not licensed in Germany, it is not their problem.

This example should serve as a warning to all blackjack players but especially German players who do not have the law on their side at this time. Our advice is to play only at reputable online casinos who are legitimately licensed and who operate in neighbouring countries.

We expect that there will be another update as the states get started with this process. Stay tuned.
