Steve Wynn Awarded $40 Million in Slander Lawsuit 13.09.2012

Steve Wynn takes his name and that of his casino brand, Wynn Resorts Ltd., seriously and so does the American public. The jury, made up of 9 men and 3 women, found “Girls Gone Wild” founder Joe Francis guilty of slandering Wynn and his brand. At first the jury awarded Wynn punitive damages in the amount of $20 million but then at the urging of Wynn’s attorney and as a way to send a clear message, the jury awarded him an additional $20 million for injury to his reputation and emotional distress.

The whole slander case stemmed from a conversation between Francis and famed music producer Quincy Jones. Although Francis claims that Jones told him that Wynn wanted to kill Francis with a shovel and bury him in the desert, Jones denied any such conversation at the trial. Francis made the story public back in 2010 when he appeared on the nationally televised daily talk show Good Morning America.

After the trial was over Wynn said: “Thank God for the justice system that finally sent a message: If you think you’re taking a cheap shot, it may be a lot more expensive than you had imagined.” Wynn obviously does not think much of Francis as is evident by Wynn calling him a “digital assassin” and an “unbelievably reckless human being” for the Girls Gone Wild Empire that Francis built which features very drunk girls taking off their tops and more for a video camera.

This is not the first time the two have faced each other in court. In 2008, Francis was ordered to pay Wynn Resorts over $2 million for money owed to the casino and earlier this year Francis also paid $7.5 million to Wynn personally in a different defamation case.
